A lot of those who know me well enough know that I love to embrace my inner child. I strongly believe that keeping in touch with this side of ourselves is powerful and helpful in our lives. As one of my favorite quotes by one of my favorite authors, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, states, “all adults were once children, but only a few remember it”.
In addition, coming to the United States at an older age and facing some adversities as a teenager led to a lack of exposure to the elements of an American childhood. In this short series I have decided to embrace this inner child which I have brought to life as an adult. The contrast between the face paint and the seriousness of the photos represents the juxtaposition of the child and adult that live within me. Moreover, the theme being Avatar: The Last Airbender highlights the American childhood experience, which I have only recently discovered and become obsessed with.
